The International University of Management (IUM) successfully hosted a workshop that focused on Green Competencies on 28 October 2025, under the theme “Towards a Sustainable and Greener Future.” The workshop, which blended both physical and online attendance, brought together academics to explore the development and integration of green competencies within Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The workshop emphasised the vital role of universities in preparing future leaders who are equipped to address environmental challenges through innovation and sound sustainable practices.

The discussions centered around the four key areas of the green sustainability framework, namely, embodying sustainability values, embracing complexity in sustainability, envisioning sustainable futures, and acting for sustainability. Participants reflected on how HEIs can embed sustainability values into their institutional culture, curricula and community engagement efforts. The facilitators emphasised the importance of cultivating environmental responsibility among staff and students, fostering an institutional mindset that prioritises ecological well-being and long-term social impact.

The discussions on embracing complexity in sustainability and envisioning sustainable futures encouraged critical thinking and system-based approaches to understanding environmental management and protection. Through interactive dialogues and activities, participants explored the interconnectedness of economic, social and ecological systems, as well as the innovative pathways universities can pursue to create green economies. The workshop also highlighted the need for visionary leadership that can guide institutions toward low-carbon emissions.

In the final segment which focused on acting for sustainability, participants identified concrete strategies for implementing sustainability initiatives collectively and individually across teaching and operations. Collaborative action plans were brainstormed to strengthen collective efforts and promote green ambitions. The workshop concluded with a collective commitment to advancing IUM’s sustainability agenda and supporting Namibia’s transition to a greener knowledge economy. As a member of the TeProD Consortium, the workshop is one of a series of IUM’s ongoing efforts to position higher education as a catalyst for a sustainable and green future.
